THE UNPUBLISHED PHOTO OF JFK AND FAMILY

As of early Saturday, the Smirking Chimp column explaining about the unpublished photo of JFK and his family had not bee bumped up to the Home Page, so I’ll put the link to the explanation here:

REAGAN’S LEGACY

Democrats can thank George W. Bush for one thing:  they don’t have to listen to the “Tear down This Wall” sound byte and hear how single-handedly Ronald Wilson Reagan ended the Cold War.  Thanks to Bush and his good Russian buddy, Putin, it was only temporarily suspended and Reagan didn’t change history he only hit the “pause” button.

WAR CRIMES

The WLJ Industries has received a cancellation notice for the Promobabble Report from a member of the SPHS ’61 squad.  (Remember when “the Duke of Earl” was the name of his car?).  No reason was stated, but best guess is because of a reference to GWB’s birthday made reference to the fact that 43 has violated the principles of International Law regarding invasions.  After spending an afternoon in the Santa Monica Public Library, enough information on the topic was gathered and if the Op-Ed page editor for a certain well known newspaper awards it a rejection slip, well then, it will be used in a column for the Smirking Chimp during the coming week and the URL will be provided in next week’s installment of the Promobabble Report.

ROCK AND ROLL MUSEUM ANNEX

This week we heard that the Rock and Roll Museum is expanding and will have an annex in New York City.

ROAD REPORT

On Tuesday, Sue and I saw a silver Cobra on Sepulvada Blvd. in the morning and then in the afternoon, we saw a Model A coupe in A+ condition over in Norwalk.  On the way home form the Eastside of town, I saw a Ferrari Red Porsche.  In a phone call, a member of the Promobabble Patrol (remember his 1931 Chev?) challenged the assertion that this was a remarkable vehicle.  It used to be (it may still be) that more Porsches are sold in California than in Germany, and I can’t remember seeing all that many red ones.  Red is the official racing color of Italian cars.  You see a red car and you take a closer look to see if it is a Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa, Fiat, or whatever, but after a bunch of years in So. Cal., I can’t say that I’ve seen too many blood red Porsches and so we include that car in this week’s road report, and note the objection filed from New Jersey.

SUMMER READING

While working at the truck company during the college years, a co-worker recommended “Turnabout” by Thorne Smith.  I looked for a copy in various used bookstores for the next twenty years.  I passed up a collector’s copy for $100 sometime during that time, but finally one Tuesday at the used bookstore near Aunt Dorothy’s apartment in Santa Monica, I found a copy in the bargain bin for a dime.  That one is good, but Thorne Smith’s “The Bishop’s Jaeggers” would make a great “edgy” romantic comedy because the couple inadvertently winds up in a nudist camp.  The fact that Smith died in about 1933 takes “edgy” to the extreme degree.

PUBLICATION DATE

Due to logistical problems, the Promobabble Report will be dated for Saturday publication and will be posted most weeks during the Saturday afternoon time for the Pacific Time Zone in the USA

QUOTE

“I’ll make my report as if I told a story, for I was taught as a child on my homeworld that Truth is a matter of the imagination.”  Ursula K. LeGuin  (Did she work for the Bush Administration?)

SONG

To mark the passing of Elvis on August 15, a few (?) years back, the disk jockey will play Bill Parson’s “All American Boy,” the laughing Elvis version of “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” where he has hysterics instead of singing the song, and Elvis and Frank (Sinatra) do a duet on “Love Me Tender” If we can we’ll include the link to the Youtube page for that rarity.  Found it!  Here it is:

It’s time to hit the highway and travel on.  Have an Eight Olympic Medals type week.
